Milestone Moment: Passage of Women’s Reservation Bill in India’s Lok Sabha after 27 Years – aiming to earmark 33 per cent seats in Lok Sabha

In September 20, a historic moment unfolded as the Lok Sabha, India’s lower house of Parliament, passed the Women’s Reservation Bill after 27 years since its initial introduction. Despite holding a significant majority in Parliament for the past decade, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government made the decision to advocate for reserved seats for women in legislatures only recently, just months ahead of the 2024 general elections.

Named the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam (Salutation to Women Power Bill), the 128th constitutional amendment bill aims to earmark 33 percent of seats in the Lok Sabha (equivalent to 181 out of the total 543 seats) and in state legislative assemblies, including the Delhi Legislative Assembly, for women. Notably, Prime Minister Narendra Modi initiated the proceedings in the newly inaugurated Parliament building by presenting the long-awaited Women’s Reservation Bill 2023.
