On September 27 th every year, World Tourism Day celebrates the significance of tourism in our global community. Founded in 1980 by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), this day serves as a reminder of the vital role tourism plays in economic growth, cultural exchange, and sustainable development. This year, the UNWTO has chosen the theme “Tourism and green investments” – to underscore the importance of environmentally responsible tourism practices.

Tourism has been a driving force behind economic development across the globe, creating numerous employment opportunities and even contributing to local income. As a labour intensive industry, there are many add-ons like – it fosters economic growth, increases foreign exchange reserves and promotes social & cultural interactions.

Green investments in Tourism: Paving the way for a sustainable tomorrow

The theme for World Tourism Day 2023, “Tourism and Green Investments,” emphasizes the industry’s role in building a greener and more sustainable future for our planet. Green investments in tourism aim to minimize the ecological footprint of the industry, promote sustainable travel, and protect natural and cultural heritage.

By prioritizing sustainable practices, the tourism sector can contribute prominently to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the UN’s roadmap for creating a better world by 2030.

The role of Tourism Entrepreneurship

Tourism entrepreneurship is a multifaceted phenomenon that encompasses a wide range of business activities within the tourism industry; from starting small tour companies to developing online travel booking platforms and creating new tourist attractions, tourism entrepreneurs are key players in shaping the industry’s landscape.

Successful tourism entrepreneurs are characterized by their innovation, creativity & customer centric approach. They have the ability to identify and respond to emerging trends and changing consumer preferences, making them integral to the industry’s growth.

Empowering women in Tourism Entrepreneurship

Notably, research shows that women constitute a significant portion of the tourism workforce in OECD member countries, representing 55.9% of the workforce. Given the sector’s high share of female employees & entrepreneurs, tourism offers a significant opportunity for women (particularly in rural areas), to unlock their entrepreneurial potential.

Recognizing this potential, efforts to empower female entrepreneurs in tourism have gained momentum. However, it’s crucial to address the challenges and barriers that women may face in this industry.

So, on World Tourism Day 2023, we celebrate the transformative power of tourism and green investments. It’s an occasion to acknowledge the critical role played by tourism entrepreneurship, with a particular focus on the empowerment of women within this dynamic sector.

As we forge ahead and strive for a more sustainable and inclusive future, let us embrace the opportunities that tourism offers to build a better world for all!
