Here’s to remembering women on Uttarakhand’s Foundation Day – November 9 2022, who have been the pillars of Uttarakhand’s economy. And, after Dehradun became capital of the state, the business scene flourished too. Growth and progress in the economic sector brought women out of their homes, to reimagine the city and create new skylines.

Here are some women entrepreneurs who worked out their dreams, breaking
stereotypes one after the other.

> Archana Tomar, Founder, Dream’s Creation

It was after overcoming many roadblocks that Archana Tomar was able to launch her own beauty parlour in Dehradun. Originally from Roorkee, she completed her education and even got diplomas in Make-up from Javed Habib’s Saloons and hairstyling from Vidya Tikri – all of which helped her to push forward in her career. After marriage, she moved to Dehradun and started her own beauty parlour – Dream’s Creations. Initially she single-handedly handled her parlour, but the path soon led to success. Today her beauty parlour is an established brand name.

> Swati Singh, Founder Saptak College of Performing Arts & Womenia Band

Life had other plans for Swati Singh, who chose a different path other than joining a government office, as her family living in Unnao district were all government employees. She moved from a teaching job in a primary school to a job in a stock market company, and then moved to Dehradun as Branch Manager. But destiny would have it otherwise. It was in Dehradun that she set up Saptak College of Performing Arts. It was the beginning of a new journey, and soon she formed an all-women band “Womenia”. Launching into the music scene with the band, she scaled new heights. This revamped her image too and today, this popular band performs at major events across the country.


> Varsha Singh, Founder, Varshaa Store

Her life as an engineer (from Hemawati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University) and worklife in an MNC in Delhi, was not really satisfying. She then stepped out to explore her passion for fashion, equipped with a diploma in fashion designing. What followed was her online store, Varshaa, which soon saw steadily increasing shoppers. Soon she was inspired to start her own boutique in Ballupur, Dehradun. Of course, the road was not easy. She not only went against the flow but forged ahead with courage and strength and her passion was crowned with success.

Her love for photography pushed her to take up the unique career as a photographer. Women are rare in this world of photography, and typically, a photographer’s job is full of challenges, but Payal Gurung proved that women can indeed succeed. And unveil a shining example too, for others to imitate. Despite getting married at an early age, marriage did not hold her back from following her dreams. Today Payal’s Click is a leading wedding & event photography company.
