World Environment Day is celebrated every year on 5 June since 1973. This day encourages awareness and action for the environment protection. It represents the primary United Nations outreach day and taking care of the environment is supported by many non-governmental organizations, businesses, educational institutions, government entities and so on. It is the largest global platform for environmental public outreach and is celebrated by millions of people across the world.

Today, we celebrate fifty years of acknowledging World Environment Day.

Most importantly, World Environment Day 2023 is a strong reminder that people’s actions on pollution matters. There’s global warming looming large. There’s air pollution. There’s plastic pollution, water pollution….and so on. Are the steps taken by governments and businesses enough, to tackle this issue? Are we doing enough?

Nature is on emergency mode

Time is running out, and nature is on emergency mode. Consider this – to keep global warming below 1.5°C this century, we must halve annual greenhouse gas emissions by 2030! Without action, exposure to air pollution beyond safe guidelines will increase by 50 percent within the decade and plastic waste flowing into aquatic ecosystems will nearly triple by 2040.

What contributes most to pollution in India? In India, dust & construction contribute about 59% to the air pollution in India, which is followed by Waste Burning. Crafting activities are mostly in the urban areas while Waste Burning is in the rural areas (agriculture).

So, we need urgent action to address these pressing issues.

Are we serious about saving the environment?

We are not serious about saving wildlife/the environment. In today’s ecological condition, conserving wildlife/environment is becoming difficult day by day. And faces challenges because of industrial revolution at each and every step. Extinction of wildlife is a natural phenomenon but the greatest threat to them comes from the activities of man and thus, conserving wildlife/environment from man is the major task. So we ourselves have created the need for conservation of wildlife.

How can we help?

We can get involved in many activities that can make a difference, like:

> Planting trees and protecting trees

> Increase in the number of wildlife sanctuaries and maintain them properly

> Afforestation – governments should take action on those who are causing deforestation, hunting etc

> Every municipality dept. must work intensely and honestly

> Spreading word about the methods of water conservation and usage of natural fertilizers for crops

Ultimately, all people and governments across the world, must have a will to save our environment, and take up strong action plans, right now. We should remember that environment is not only trees, water and air but also all animal species together makes environment.

If necessary precautions are not taken, many problems await us. Not in the near future, but NOW!!!.
