The tradition can be traced back to 1962 – when the birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, India’s second President and a distinguished scholar, was declared ‘Teachers’ Day’. Dr. Radhakrishnan himself believed that his birthday should not be marked by personal celebration, but as a day to honour teachers everywhere. Since then, this occasion has served as a reminder of the transformative role educators play in society.
