Ghana, once known as “The Gold Coast,” is now shining for a new reason – its unstoppable women entrepreneurs. Ranked third in Africa for the highest proportion of women business owners, Ghana is witnessing a powerful shift, where women are no longer just supporting the economy – they’re driving it. According to the 2021 Mastercard Index of Women Entrepreneurs, women make up a substantial portion of the country’s business landscape, with nearly 46% of the entrepreneurial workforce made up of women, as per the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor.
The Silent Rise of Ghanaian Women in Business
These women lead ventures in agriculture, healthcare, tech, fashion, education and more. From introducing climate-smart farming methods to building digital platforms that solve real-world problems, they are redefining what entrepreneurship looks like in West Africa. However, despite their remarkable contributions, many face persistent barriers – lack of credit, limited access to training & the burden of informal work.
But they’re not backing down.
With increasing government support, international partnerships & grassroots movements, Ghana’s women entrepreneurs are overcoming odds and building a future that blends profit with purpose. They are more than business owners – they are pioneers, problem-solvers & nation-builders.
Now we can take a look at some enterprising women entrepreneurs from Ghana.

Like many other countries in Africa, Ghana is battling to find sustainable solutions to a number of socio-economic problems like – the need for affordable transport, effective ways of fighting poverty and unemployment, and the need to create more sustainable social entrepreneurs.
Winnifred Selby has a vision and an innovative approach to start solving such problems and she co-founded Afrocentric Bamboo with Bernice Dapaah, at a very young age – when she was just 15! It is a company that manufactures and markets bicycles made from, of all things – bamboo.
Today, she heads what has become a growing brand. Designed in-house, Afrocentric Bamboo bikes are sturdy, affordable and made to tackle the high terrain and rough roads of rural Ghana. She actively demonstrates through her positive approach to sustainable entrepreneurship that young people can improve their own economic futures through such projects.
