How Bina Modi defeated substantial odds to head $1.5 billion conglomerate

Bina Modi epitomises a successful woman entrepreneur, venturing with elan into areas hitherto considered to be reserved for men.

Modi is the Head of Family Council of the $1.5 billion conglomerate, Modi Enterprises. She is also Director at Godfrey Phillips India Limited. Modi has founded several prominent brands like Bina Fashions, Ego Specialty Restaurant Chain, Dessange Salon, and Beacon Travels. She serves on the board of numerous group companies of Modi Enterprises. Her businesses make substantial contributions to the parent conglomerate.

Modi is the wife of noted industrialist KK Modi but has created such a strong portfolio for herself, that she today shines on her own.

Deservingly, Modi has been conferred a Ph.D Honoris Causa, by Dr KN Modi University for her contribution to the fields of design, arts, technology, management, commerce, agriculture, fashion and hospitality.

The Women Economic Forum had honoured her with the ‘Women of the Decade in Business & Leadership 2018’. She had also found a place on ‘India’s Most Powerful Women’, a book by Prem Ahluwalia. Modi has also been a winner of the prestigious Achiever’s Award in 2019.

Modi has striven to introduce the most modern management and human resource concepts into the functioning of the group.

Modi, hailing from an orthodox family, recounted the hurdles she had to overcome in her quest to carve out a niche for herself. Her family did not encourage women working, and so, it was not easy to pursue her ambitions, Modi said. She added that Ph.D Honoris Causa serves as a validation of the obstacles she had to overcome as an entrepreneur.
