Every year, September 18 is celebrated as World Bamboo Day – a global event aimed at raising awareness about the importance of bamboo in sustainable development and environmental conservation. Bamboo, the fastest-growing woody plant in the world, is really an evergreen grass that can grow without fertilizers and thrives in diverse climates. With its versatility, bamboo has countless applications – from construction to medicine, food, and crafts. Its role as a sustainable, eco-friendly material is well – recognized, making it a perfect choice for both commercial and residential uses.
India, being the second-largest cultivator of bamboo in the world, boasts around 136 species of bamboo. In addition to its environmental benefits, bamboo is also known as the “poor man’s timber” due to its widespread use in rural livelihoods. Yet, its significance extends beyond survival, as bamboo symbolizes longevity, strength & resilience – traits that align closely with entrepreneurship, particularly women entrepreneurs.
Bamboo Entrepreneurship & Women Empowerment
In regions like Arunachal Pradesh, bamboo has become a powerful tool for women entrepreneurs, while driving economic growth and also preserving cultural heritage. Women like Nyapi Doni, who started “Arunachal Bamboo” in 2019, are using bamboo as the foundation of their businesses – producing furniture, home utility items & jewelry with indigenous designs. Today, Doni earns over ₹50,000 per month, proving that bamboo-based industries are both sustainable and lucrative.
Bamboo-based entrepreneurship offers a low-investment yet high-reward business model that is attracting women entrepreneurs across India, especially in the Northeast. Significantly, the demand for bamboo products, such as bamboo plates, bowls, and furniture, is rising in India and globally, giving these women the opportunity to contribute to the local economy while supporting environmental conservation.
Moreover, the state government of Arunachal Pradesh has proposed a ₹560 crore project for the holistic development of the bamboo sector, aiming to benefit over 10,000 entrepreneurs. This initiative is not only generating revenue for the state but also providing women with the tools and resources they need to thrive in the bamboo industry.

As we celebrate World Bamboo Day, we also recognize the critical role that women entrepreneurs are playing in the bamboo industry. They are not only driving economic growth but also championing sustainability – by tapping into bamboo’s potential. Their success stories indeed, serve as an inspiration to women around the world – proving that eco-friendly businesses can be both profitable and impactful.
