Forests are the lifeline of our planet, providing food, livelihoods & environmental stability. On March 21, 2025, the world unites to observe the International Day of Forests. This year’s theme is – “Forests and Food” which highlights the critical role forests play in global food security, offering nutrition, economic sustenance & ecological balance.
Forests: The backbone of Food Security
Forests provide a wide range of nutritious foods, medicinal plants, and essential resources for millions worldwide. They support biodiversity, protect soil fertility, regulate water cycles, and absorb carbon dioxide – making them indispensable for a sustainable future. From indigenous communities to global food industries, forests are vital for feeding the world.
The urgent need for Conservation
Despite their importance, forests are disappearing at an alarming rate. 15 billion trees vanish annually, affecting food production, climate resilience, and biodiversity. The $44 trillion global economy is at risk due to nature loss, making forest conservation a priority for businesses, governments, and individuals.
Could emerging entrepreneurship save our forests?
Forest conservation is in itself one of the greatest environmental challenges of our time… and, yet one of the most threatened by illegal business practices and corrupt activities.
Yearly the world loses around 5 million hectares of forest, 95% of which happens in the tropics. The forest sector is in a continuous struggle; its constant vulnerabilities and threats have contributed to this great ‘deforestation’.
Global efforts to restore forests
The 1t.org initiative is leading the charge in restoring 1 trillion trees by 2030, with companies, governments, and communities pledging billions of trees. Efforts in India, China, Africa, and the Amazon showcase how global partnerships can drive meaningful change.
Women Entrepreneurs in Forest Conservation
Women are playing a growing role in sustainable forest-based businesses, from agroforestry to eco-tourism. Organizations like FAO and IIED are supporting women-led projects that promote sustainable forestry, carbon capture & eco-friendly farming.
Forests are more than just trees – they are the future of food, climate stability, and biodiversity.
Let’s commit to protecting and restoring them for generations to come!
So, let’s take action – by planting trees, spreading awareness, and making sustainable choices to protect our forests and food systems!
