On August 15, 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s powerful speech on the occasion
of India’s Independence Day, had a significant focus on women’s empowerment & their pivotal role in shaping a “Viksit Bharat” (Developed India) by 2047.
Outlining his vision for India’s future and reflecting on the country’s progress, the PM stressed on some important points. He emphasized the importance of empowering women entrepreneurs in the country; and highlighted the immense potential of women-led startups – in driving economic growth and social change. Vocal for Local has become a new mantra for the economic system.
Modi also announced various initiatives aimed at supporting women entrepreneurs, including a new scheme for credit funding and a national platform for promoting their products. He encouraged women to take up entrepreneurship – citing their natural strengths in nurturing and innovation.
Empowering women for a stronger nation
Quite significantly, the Prime Minister underlined the immense contributions of women in various domains – from sports and education to entrepreneurship. He announced that 10 crore women have participated in self-help groups (SHGs) over the last decade, significantly contributing to the nation’s economic fabric. Moving forward, these SHGs will receive a substantial boost, with a financial package of ₹20 lakh allocated to each, building on the ₹9 lakh crore already disbursed.
Creating a more inclusive society
Highlighting the progress made in gender justice, PM Modi reaffirmed the government’s sincere commitment to fostering an inclusive society. He noted the extension of maternity leave from 12 to 26 weeks for working women and acknowledged the reforms benefiting tribal communities and transgender individuals – under various government schemes.
A greener future led by women
India’s leadership in renewable energy and commitment to combating global warming were key themes. PM Modi emphasized the ban on single-use plastics and the nation’s progress towards net-zero carbon emissions, making India the only G20 nation to meet the Paris Accord targets.
Youth & women as Pillars of India’s Growth
The Prime Minister called upon India’s youth and women to lead the charge – in emerging sectors like the gaming industry, ensuring that Indian innovations and talent reach global platforms. He stressed that the nation’s future growth is intertwined with the empowerment and participation of its women.
