Before the Covid-19 outbreak, Sana Afouaiz, founder of Womenpreneur, a company formed to support women entrepreneurs, toured three countries in the Middle East and North Africa (Mena) –  to scan the challenges faced by women founders in the region. She did gain a number of insights and has outlined steps needed to overcome these challenges.

Discovering that incredible potential was unlocked in the region, led to Womenpreneur Initiative and SANAD’s Entrepreneurship Academy join hands to promote female tech entrepreneurship in the Mena region. The goal of this unprecedented empowerment campaign was to give visibility to women in tech, innovation and entrepreneurship.

While interviewing a host of women, it was revealed that mindset as a major mindblock and was the main barrier preventing women. On the positive side, some argued that a change of mindset is slowly emerging.

After the great success of their tour, they are planning a second edition to explore new countries: Algeria, Egypt and Lebanon. Now, in the context of the current Covid-19 crisis, their aim is to find out how this pandemic is affecting female entrepreneurs’ lives; and they will also look at how women are tackling this challenging situation and arriving at solutions.
