Rural women are key agents for achieving the transformational economic, environmental and social changes required for sustainable development. In the present state of crisis caused due to the COVID-19, a huge group of migrant population, including women, has moved back to their homes in rural areas. They are left unemployed and taking up the challenge of creating more employment opportunities for them, FICCI Ladies Organisation signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the social enterprise Women on Wings.
This collaboration came into being for the sole purpose of providing sustainable livelihoods and economic empowerment for women in rural areas. This partnership will aim to identify and support social enterprises working with rural women in the fields of agriculture, food-processing, eco-tourism, textiles, handicrafts, waste management and non-timber forest products thereby creating jobs for women residing in rural area . This in turn will aid in improving the situation of social and economic unrest brought by the COVID-19. Empowering them is key not only to well-being of individuals, families and rural communities but also to overall economic productivity, given the large presence of women in the agriculture workforce!
